Staying Alive? Alienation in Digital Culture and Intimate Life

PPSC Learning Lab

Presenter

Once upon a time we had a telephone and a television. Next up we had a computer and a printer. Then came phones that could do 100 things. We got hooked. What new piece of world news, scandal, wellness advertisement, and friends’ gossip would be calling, then demanding our attention?

We live in strange and disturbing times. People are becoming zombified by their phones. Mother soothes herself by scrolling while her infant is crying for her attention.  Baby is given a screen before she can even hold it.

What is this doing to the brain, the development of the Self and to our relationships?

I will discuss the impact of technology and AI on us individually and as a society. Then I will tell the story of a patient who complained of her “remote relationship (in two senses)” and how the treatment helped her both improve her marriage and her own sense of agency.

Our gift lies in our capacity to relate in the deepest possible way, bringing our humanity and genuine caring into the work. We can create a ripple effect that emanates outward.

Participants' experiences and cases are welcome!
